Architecture is rooted in traditions, social habits, and rituals but is dynamic from cultural phenomena.
The Studio Great Lakes design method is driven by an intense curiosity for cultural phenomena which can come from or enhance the built environment. Accepting nothing at face value, investigations and interrogations of culture reveal latent conditions, ‘soft space’, to inspire new outcomes at human, urban, and regional scales. This is realized through construction, public outreach, and/or disciplinary dissemination.
"The Great Lakes coastline and its constituent parts does not culturally define an edge or boundary but constitutes a single thread (a continuous line) that stitches and winds through a regional network of communities and cultural practices.” - Elizabeth George
